We call them desire lines in the garderning world, the paths that people create for themselves to find their own way from one point to another.
We often avoid paths laid down by other people and find our own ways. We cut down the corners and create the spontaneous paths intead of following the designed paths.

On serendipity
As Louis Pasteur wrote, “In the field of observation, chance favours only the prepared mind.” The word that best describes this subtle blend of chance and agency is “serendipity”. These days, we tend to associate serendipity with luck, and we neglect the sagacity. But some conditions are more conducive to accidental discovery than others.
